Bolivia Czernon

Bolivia Czernon first became exposed to quiltmaking as a child by watching her mother Rosella ‘Mamay’ Fraser make quilts at home in the community of North Preston.

Biography

These quilts were utilitarian and were used by her large family of 14 siblings as blankets during the winters.  As she got older Bolivia participated in the cutting of blocks and the sewing sections for her mother’s quilts along with her nine sisters.  In her twenties, Czernon began making baby quilts for friends as presents.

In 1998, she joined the Black Artists Network of Nova Scotia (BANNS) and began making picture quilts  for submission to  the exhibitions being organized by the organization at the time. Her first picture quilt St Thomas United Baptist Church was featured in the BANNS exhibition In This Place- the first ever exhibition of African Nova Scotian art (1998) and When Black Women Useta Fly- the first ever exhibition of African Nova Scotian quilts (2002).

In 2011 she began making quilts for the popular The Secret Codes- a BANNS exhibition of picture quilts exploring the Underground Railroad and the lives of African Nova Scotian women which has been touring Maritime arts centres and galleries since 2012.
